Pictures of the House
September 20, 2003. Almost done! Still need to figure out the paint on the porch posts. That's been my (Nancy's) Sunday activity for the past three weeks!Click pictures for enlargements
Note the following:
- On the porch, the brackets on the posts have been removed. We're looking for a pattern for larger, more graceful brackets.
- We saw the deck floor for the first time today (it was covered with paper and plastic) and it got stained! Mahogany wood with mahogany stain. It's gorgeous.
- The windows on the second floor above the front door are recently uncovered stained-glass "sidelights" and are green and yellow panels with circles of red glass. Stunning. Click here for a fuzzy night picture and close-up of window from the inside.
- Discovered through neighbors that this house used to be a part of a local girl's orphanage in the mid 1920s. We have photocopies of two views of the house and are waiting for photo reproductions. We'll post them when we get them. That's how we found the windows on the second floor (see above).
- On the east side of the house, the siding to the right of the back porch is all new. It used to be awful plywood with a few vertical pieces of trim. Now it looks like it's always belonged. Our carpenter is great.
- The gables on the east and north sides of the house have new cedar shakes on the bottom rows, and no more birds (or squirrels or flying squirrels or bats) are roosting in the cracks and crevices. We will put up a bat box somewhere when this is all done, though.
- The five colors on the house are: Slumber (light gray), Storm Cloud (dark gray), Beauport Aubergine, white, and the pink is actually the aubergine mixed with white.
